About

Hi! I'm Bethany. I'm a public health professional who is passionate about the intersection of public health, policy,  and communications. This site is a hub for some of my thoughts and side projects - feel free to take a look!

A little bit about me:

I have my Master of Public Health in Health Promotion, as well as my Honours Bachelor of Science, from the University of Toronto.

In my undergraduate degree, I completed majors in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and Sociology. I often get asked "why did you do that combination?" - since it's a bit of an interesting mix. Well, to answer that - I started off in Life Sciences, but quickly realized that I had a passion for the social sciences after I did my first sociology course. I loved learning about animals, and found the biological principles I was learning to be very interesting, but also wanted to be able to build my social science skill set and writing abilities. Some of my favourite courses were actually at the intersection of biology and sociology (i.e., sexuality and gender, HIV/AIDs and society). I wanted a career where I could use both my biology and sociology skills - and eventually found public health!

I did my Master of Public Health at the University of Toronto (and loved it!). I learned a lot of great skills during this program (an MPH truly does give you such a diverse skill set that allows you to work in so many public health and public health adjacent fields - I tell people this all the time!) I also had the chance to work in both research and policy during my practicum placements - both such amazing experiences.

Professionally, my passions lie within public health policy (and/or healthy public policy), communications, and government relations. I love it!

On a more personal note:

I. love. writing. I'm a bit of a nerd in that sense - but I love to write, either just in a casual voice (like now) or in a professional tone (like I do at work). I had wanted to build a professional website for years, and only recently made the leap, as I enrolled in a PR/Digital Communications class (building a website was required, and I'm grateful it was!) I also love writing for lay audiences - you'll find a lot of the content I do is written casually on this website - I want my content to be easy to understand and accessible for all.

This website is a hub for some of my thoughts and side projects - and also some digital communications 'experiments' - i.e., I just launched my first podcast on this site! Take a look at the 'Building Resilience' podcast tab for more info.

I also love supporting the next generation, including helping potential or new MPH students! I've had quite a few students (from a range of schools) reach out to me since I graduated from my own MPH. My views are my own, of course, and I don't represent any organization's views or opinions. But I'm happy to answer any questions about graduate school life or doing an MPH - at least to the best of my abilities, and based on my personal experience. Potential and new MPH students - feel free to contact me via the 'Contact' form on this site, if you'd like to chat.
