Welcome to 'Building Resilience: Timeless Tips from Experienced Professionals!' - hosted by me, Bethany Rankin. Building Resilience is a podcast designed to help young professionals navigate the workplace and build resilience. In this podcast, I interview seasoned professionals with decades of experience on their best tips for building resilience - we'll hear a bit about their career trajectory, how they define resilience, some tangible and timeless tips they'd give to young professionals, and their favourite piece of advice they've received and how it's shaped their definition of resilience.

You might be saying - "But Bethany, you've never done a podcast before!" - this is true. It's a bit of a digital experiment for me. I'm 'chronically online' as the kids say, which means I'd like to say I'm fairly up-to-date on podcast formats, digital content, etc., and thought this would push my digital content skills (which it certainly has). Let me tell you, editing audio on Garageband is no small feat! Hosting this podcast has also let me break out those rudimentary interviewing skills I learned in my sociology undergraduate program, which has also been cool.

Anyway, in case you're wondering - 'Building Resilience: Timeless Tips from Experienced Professionals' was born from an assignment I was given in a PR/Digital Communications class at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. There were a few reasons I chose the topic of resilience, with a specific focus on young professionals:

  1. During my Master of Public Health, resilience was a topic that my professors often brought up. Resilience is so important to our overall health and well-being, and having healthy coping mechanisms and a positive outlook on life can do wonders for us in the long-term. I had heard the term consistently through my MPH, and knew that resilience was an important skill to build, especially for young adults who are navigating the workplace for the first time.

  2. I have had an influx of potential and new MPH students (from various schools) reach out to me about tips and tricks for practicums, navigating hurdles during their programs, workplace dynamics, etc.! This also inspired me to create this podcast so that there would be an information hub I could point young adults towards for some extra advice (additional written articles also to come - stay tuned!) Resiliency is so important in any environment.

  3. Prior to this class, I had been wanting to develop my own website and digital content for a while, so when this UofT PR/Digital Communications class provided the opportunity - I thought, "well, why not a podcast?" - it was something new I had never done before. And thus, Building Resilience was born! And of course, who better to provide insight on navigating the workplace and building resilience, than seasoned professionals who have had decades of experience? It's truly interesting hearing their perspectives and insights.

Building resilience is a journey - it's not just one event that gets you to your end goal; it's a process! Come with me through this podcast series as we learn these seasoned professionals' best tips and tricks. Together, we will build resilience!
